Newsletter - August 2008
Welcome to the August Newsletter from Sunny Harbour Cat & Kitten Rescue. If you are having difficulty viewing our Newsletter then you can also view it online by clicking here.
Life at Sunny Harbour Cat & Kitten Rescue has been very busy with the last 2 months alone seeing us come to the aid of 33 cats and kittens. A massive number and we have been very lucky to have been able to find homes for most of these little ones.
Sadly though, we have also had to turn away many more quite simply due to lack of space for housing these cats and kittens. Sometimes no matter how much we wish we could help, without somewhere to lay their head we are unable to take some cats in without joining our waiting list or having to pass them onto another rescue for help.
With this in mind we currently have plans afoot for a section of new housing which will allow us to accommodate 4 more cats at any one time. We are currently working to raise funds to purchase the materials necessary but we are hopeful that work will be able to start before the end of the year.
Can you help our fundraising by having a clear out?
We are currently in dire need of items we can use to raise funds for the shelter at our regular car boot sales. Items such as;
-
General Bric a Brac
-
Ornaments
-
Books
-
Household furnishings
-
DVD's / CD's / Video's
-
Games for PS2 / X Box, etc
-
Children's Games / Toys
would all be very gratefully received as current stocks are running very low. If you have a number of items and are unable to drop them off at Sunny Harbour Cat & Kitten Rescue then please call us on 01592 783732 and we can make arrangements for collection.
Opening of the Sunny Harbour Online Shop
On the topic of fundraising we are pleased to announce that we have managed to launch our very own online shop. Whilst not brimming with products at the current time we do have a taster of some of the items to come available for sale. Our shop can be accessed by visiting:
and choosing the Items option from the menu bar at the top of the page.
Products currently waiting addition to the shop include the CatIt Water Fountain at £20 (RRP £29.99) and a selection of 2009 calendars which will go on sale at £5. These items, although not currently on our web site store can be purchased directly from Sunny Harbour Cat & Kitten Rescue in person. Please call with enquiries.
Collars v's Microchipping
Should you place a collar on your cat or simply have them microchipped?
or, should you just give them a collar?
This is a question that we get asked frequently and in short our answer would be to most definately have your cat / kitten microchipped, however the collar (in my honest opinion) is optional.
That said, there are still many people in today's society who mistake a cat without a collar as being a stray and this in itself can lead to many problems with cats being taken in by rescue's or members of the public whose owner may live very close by. Thankfully, with a microchip we can return the cat to the owner as quickly as possible.
One advantage that a microchip does have is that it cannot fall off, it cannot get snagged and will always provide the relevant chip number so that we can trace the owner.
Collars, if not the correct type, can result in serious injury or even death of your cat / kitten especially if they get their collar snagged on a fence, wire or tree branch.
What is the correct collar type?
If using collars on your cat please ensure that they are Safety Collars or Snap / Breakaway Collars. These ensure that if your cat or kitten does become snagged that the collar will simply break away, ensuring that no harm comes to them.
ALWAYS TEST THE BREAKAWAY CLASP ON THE COLLAR REGULARLY
Please do not place buckle only collars on your cat or the cheap buckled flea collars that you find in the pet shops. These can be very dangerous to the cat should they become entangled or snagged and many vets up and down the country treat such injuries every day.
Does Microchipping Work?
In a word, yes. In early August we saw Benny a lovely ginger boy come into Sunny Harbour Cat & Kitten Rescue. Fortunately we found that he was microchipped and we were therefore able to get in touch with his owners.
We were shocked to learn that poor little Benny, or Bon as was his real name, had actually been missing for 5 weeks... an incredible length of time for the little one to have been missing and fending for himself. He was so fortunate to have a microchip or else we would never have been able to trace his owners quickly, if at all.
